Lindsay Ranson

Lindsay Ranson, my grandmother's brother (my great uncle) served in the 24th Battalion AIF  during World War 1, the Great War.

He enlisted shortly after his 18th birthday in May 1915 in Victoria and went on to see action at Gallipoli, and in France, and Belgium at such places as the Somme and Passchendaele.

This photo was was taken in London whilst recuperating from wounds  inflicted at Passchendaele, near Ypres in Belgium on 9 October 1917 whilst advancing on Dairy  Wood. The battalion came under fire from Daisy Wood 100 yards further north.

His wounds  were described as 'gunshot wounds to the thighs' (note the walking stick).

After recuperating at Norwich Hospital, England, he returned to service and rejoined his battalion, and was killed  by a sniper in the French village of Montbrehain on the last day that Australians saw action  in the great War on 5th of October 1918, just over one month from the Armistice.

He was 21 years old.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

Thanks to the Australian government's gift to the nation, an extraordinary amount of data has been cataloged in relation to those who served during all conflicts that Australia has taken part in at the Australian War Memorial Website.

Below are links to copies of documents stored on the Australian War Memorial site, all relating to Lindsay.
